Meng Backs Yang, Joins Yang for New York as Campaign Co-Chair

**RELEASE** May 10th, 2021

New York, NYToday, United States Congresswoman Grace Meng of Queens, New York’s only Asian American Representative in Congress, endorsed Andrew Yang for Mayor of New York City. If elected, Andrew Yang would be the first Asian American mayor in New York City’s history.

Said Congresswoman Meng, “Today in Queens – in the area I live in, grew-up in and represent – I am honored to stand by Andrew Yang’s side to proudly endorse his candidacy for mayor of New York City. A recent top contender for President of the United States, Andrew is an outstanding leader who is hard-working, compassionate and smart, and he’ll work tirelessly each and every day for the residents of our city once he is sworn-in as mayor. The challenges facing New York City are enormous as we work to rebound from the coronavirus crisis, and Andrew Yang is the right person to ensure that we move full speed ahead from the havoc that the pandemic has wreaked upon us. He is the help and hope that New Yorkers need during this challenging and unprecedented time, and I cannot wait to work with him to make New York City an even better place to live and work in.”

Said Andrew Yang, "We’re building a special coalition here in New York City. I’m so thrilled Congresswoman Meng is going to help lead this movement. She is a champion for her constituents in Queens, representing their needs tirelessly in Congress. When hate crimes against Asians spiked at the start of the pandemic, Grace jumped into action immediately to sponsor and pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which will make Asians in New York and across the nation safer. Our campaign is about hope and together, we are going to make history."

Congresswoman Meng’s endorsement is even more meaningful after a recent report revealed the AAPI community is the most underrepresented in American politics. In New York, the representation differential factor is -91.7%, lower than New Jersey and California, among federal, statewide, state legislature, and county offices.

Said Varun Nikore, AAPI Victory Fund President, “The choice for New York City Mayor couldn’t be clearer: Andrew Yang should and must be elected the next mayor of New York. We welcome Congresswoman Meng’s endorsement of Andrew and take it as a reminder that AAPI candidates must stick together. AAPI’s are rising. Our candidates and elected officials are unified and ready to put Andrew over the top. We will mobilize our networks and do everything in our power to ensure that Andrew Yang wins this election. It’s time to get to work.”

Born in Elmhurst and raised in both Bayside and Flushing, Congresswoman Meng has fought hard to expand opportunities for communities of color, young people and women, as well as secured resources to help local small businesses as the U.S. Representative for NY’s 6th Congressional District.

Meng joins her colleague, Congressman Ritchie Torres of the Bronx, Yang for NY Campaign Co-Chair, State Assembly Member Ron Kim, City Council Member Margaret Chin, and Council candidate Gigi Li in supporting Andrew Yang’s bid for Mayor.
