Manhattan Council Member Margaret Chin Endorses Andrew Yang for Mayor of New York City

**RELEASE** January 27th, 2021

Andrew Yang also endorsed Gigi Li in her race for the City Council’s 1st District, as well as Council Member Chin’s Bill Reforming the City’s Street Vendor Laws.

Manhattan, NYToday, Council Member Margaret Chin of Manhattan endorsed Andrew Yang for Mayor of New York City.

Council Member Chin is the representative for New York City’s 1st Council District, and currently serves as Chair of the Council’s Committee on Aging. As a member of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus; co-chair of the Women's Caucus; and a founding member of the Progressive Caucus, Council Member Chin has worked tirelessly throughout the years to address the pressing needs of her constituents.

Council Member Chin has represented New York City's 1st District since 2010, becoming the first Asian-American woman to serve on the City Council. In 1963, Council Member Chin immigrated with her family, from Hong Kong to New York City, at nine years old and grew up in NYC Chinatown, having attended P.S. 130 and J.H.S. 65. She went on to graduate from Bronx High School of Science and City College of New York, where she earned a degree in education.

Said Council Member Margaret Chin, “Andrew Yang rose to the national spotlight not because he has name recognition, but because he has good ideas. He is a fresh voice in the mayoral race who can separate the politics from what will truly benefit New Yorkers as we work to recover from the pandemic, and he has the proven leadership skills to push past the bureaucracy of our city's government and make real change. We need a leader who will be a true advocate for our marginalized communities, and I am confident that Andrew will be a Mayor for all neighborhoods, and all New Yorkers. I am proud to endorse Andrew Yang for Mayor of New York City.”

Said Andrew Yang, “I am deeply proud to receive this endorsement from Council Member Chin, a trailblazer for Asian American representation, an unwavering advocate for seniors, and a lifetime champion of affordable housing. Margaret’s latest bill reforming the City’s outdated street vendor laws is an incredible example of how her leadership has made a difference in the lives of New Yorkers. Street vendors are some of the city’s smallest businesses; they’re essential fixtures on our streets and an incredible economic empowerment driver for low-income and immigrant families.”

Said Candidate for NYC Council District 1, Gigi Li, “My time in public service in New York has taught me how to tell the difference between real positive change and an empty gesture. I'm happy to say that Andrew Yang is the real deal. I'm proud to endorse Andrew's campaign for Mayor of New York and stand with him as we work to make our City better for all New Yorkers.”

Continued Andrew Yang, “Gigi has spent decades working for the people of Lower Manhattan and knows its communities better than anyone else. She is a creative problem solver, a dedicated social worker, and a smart, pragmatic leader who can hit the ground running on day one in City Hall. We need someone who has a proven track record in the neighborhood - I am thoroughly impressed by her detailed knowledge of the community's needs and her long history of responsiveness to them. I am proud to endorse her candidacy to be the next New York City Council Member for District 1.”
